About Chihuahuas
The Chihuahua is a fun-loving breed who gets their name from the city Chihuahua in Mexico. These sturdy little dogs are the smallest recognized breed. Their life expectancy is 12+ years, often into their 20’s. This small statured dog has no idea about their tiny size. They believe themselves to be the largest breed in the canine family. We won’t tell them the breed standard is 2-6 pounds (but remember some do mature a little larger). With proper socialization, they are known to be outgoing and love meeting new people.
The chihuahua comes in two varieties, long coat, and short coat. Both varieties present the same physical characteristics other than their coat length. The Canadian Kennel Club (CKC) describes the Chihuahua to have a round, apple shaped head, with erect ears. The body should display a straight back and wide neck and chest. The front and hind legs should both be straight and not display pointed in out out toes.
The Chihuahua coat comes in a variety of colours and patterns from Cream and fawn to blue and black. The Canadian Kennel Club does not accept Merle as a colour/pattern within the breed.
